    • Helping to shape the vision for the Bowmanville Zoo park lands
Helping to shape the vision for the Bowmanville Zoo park landsIt’s not every day that 35 acres of urban parkland becomes available. The former Bowmanville Zoo closed a few years ago after nearly 100 years of private operation. The land has been sold to a developer, but 35 acres of the former site have been given to the Municipality of Clarington for an imaginative greenspace use. The park portion lies in the floodplain of the neighboring Soper Creek, and would contain paths along the creek connecting the lands to existing trail systems to the north and south. Seeing an opportunity to help shape the vision for this greenspace, Valleys 2000 has entered into a formal agreement with the Municipality of Clarington (endorsed by Council on May 30, 2022). Bowmanville has a unique opportunity with a 35-acre plot of land, to create a bold and ambitious vision for a municipal park that will attract residents from across Clarington and beyond. Valleys 2000 volunteers are keen to help create something special. Valleys 2000 has engaged The Planning Partnership, a leading landscape architect, to create a high-level concept for creative use of this space. The first step is a visioning session (“charette”) with municipal staff and community leaders, which will help inform a comprehensive Parks Master Plan for the Bowmanville Zoo Lands. As a charity organization, Valleys 2000 has committed to fundraise to support the park once the Master Plan has been approved by Clarington Council. Valleys 2000 is proud to be working shoulder to shoulder with the Municipality of Clarington to help shape a world-class park within urban Bowmanville that will be enjoyed for generations.... • VALLEYS 2000 LAUNCHES GUIDED SMARTPHONE TOUR OF BOWMANVILLE’S CREEKS
VALLEYS 2000 LAUNCHES GUIDED SMARTPHONE TOUR OF BOWMANVILLE’S CREEKSBOWMANVILLE, June 20, 2020 – Valleys 2000 today launched “Connected Creeks,” a series of smartphone-based digital wayfinding stations on Bowmanville and Soper creeks. Starting today, visitors to Bowmanville Creek and Soper Creek can use their smartphones to take a guided, interactive tour of the valleys. By tapping their phones on one of 18 prominently placed green and blue circular stations, people will gain access to web pages, activities, and games for children to learn more about the creeks’ important ecosystem within the Bowmanville community. “Over the past three months of Covid lockdown, more and more Clarington families have come to appreciate just how blessed we are to have such amazing urban greenspaces,” said Ron Strike, President of Valleys 2000. “Now, everyone who loves our Valleys will have a new, high tech way to find out about their history, wildlife, and the important role they play in Durham’s great quality of life. Thanks to all our volunteers and partners who helped make this project possible.” “Connected Creeks” has been part of the ongoing Resilient Circle of Green, an ambitious plan spearheaded by Valleys 2000 to connect the trail systems from Bowmanville Creek to Soper Creek south at the lake and to the north, making Bowmanville surrounded by a circle of greenspace and paths for walkers, runners, cyclists and anglers to enjoy. “The Greenbelt Foundation is proud to have supported Valleys 2000 in creating this innovative system of wayfinding stations, part of Bowmanville’s broader ‘Resilient Circle of Green’ initiative,” said Edward McDonnell, CEO of the Greenbelt Foundation. “Especially in light of COVID-19 and the need for socially distant outdoor activities, these self-guiding stations present an excellent opportunity for citizens to safely enjoy the Greenbelt and learn about the creek’s ecological, cultural and economic significance.” Connected Creeks is the first part of that master plan, and was funded collaboratively through the Greenbelt Foundation and Park People, after Valleys 2000 received a $25,000 grant in 2019. Other partners included Ontario Power Generation ($5000), Will Davidson LLP/ Ron Strike ($5000) and several other community partners.   “This is an incredibly important day for the Bowmanville community and our beautiful valleys,” said Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster. “I think we all know that our valleys contribute to our great quality of life — and now thanks to the hard work of volunteers and municipal staff and the generosity of our businesses, we’ll all know exactly how much.” The socially distanced grand opening of “Connected Creeks” took place June 20th at Bowmanville Creek, accompanied by Mayor Foster, Valleys Board Members, Greenbelt executives and municipal leaders. The Resilient Circle of Green could see the Soper and Bowmanville Creek trails joined at the south along the lakefront and to the north above Concession, creating a circle of greenspace and trails around Bowmanville for cyclists, anglers, runners and families to enjoy. The project is part of a collaborative grant program that helps people explore, celebrate and enhance their local urban river valleys. Community-based organizations including Conservation Authorities, social service agencies, local schools, nonprofits and Indigenous communities were eligible to apply for up to $25,000. “The Bowmanville and Soper Creek watersheds are important ecosystems with significant historical, social and ecological value,” said Edward McDonnell, CEO of the Greenbelt Foundation. “We’re pleased to invest in enhancing these river valleys as part of our 2019 Greenbelt River Valley Connector Program, which strives to deepen the public’s connection to their local Greenbelt-protected river valley.” “Last year, over 2000 people were engaged through this program.  There was such great work happening across the GTA” said Dave Harvey, Executive Director Park People. “We’re very excited to see this —and other community impacts — that the projects will have this year.” To learn more about Valleys 2000, visit us on Facebook.
